マッキーノコートは米陸軍が第一次大戦から採用した歴史ある防寒用のコートである。初期のマッキーノコートは厚手のコットンダック素材であったが、生地が硬く、動き難い事から、より着心地の良いコットンポプリン素材に変更された。外観に置いても改良が進み、前身モデルのM-1942まではショールカラーでウエストベルト付きあったが、このM-1943から刻み目の入ったラペル襟に改良され、同時にウエストベルトも排除された。また、裏地に使用されるウールブランケットの肩と袖をコットンツイルで覆い、運動性と耐久性に置いても格段に向上した。終戦までにはマッキーノコートの呼び名は消え、ジープコートと呼ばれるようになった。

The Mackinaw coat is a historic winter coat that was adopted by the U.S. Army during the World War I. The early Mackinaw coat was originally made of heavy cotton duck fabric, but because the fabric was too stiff and hard to move, it was later replaced with more comfortable cotton poplin fabric. Other improvements were also made in appearance. The shawl collar and the waist belt, which are the features of M-1942 model, were changed to the notched lapel collar while the belt was removed. By the end of the war, the name of the coat “Mackinaw coat” was changed to” Jeep coat”.
