The AN-S-31 (AN6550) was a summer flying suit that the US ArmyAir Forces and the US Navy developed together in 1943-1944 forcommon use. There are two version with the main labels showingAN-S-31 and AN6550. The pattern traces its roots to the M-426A,which had previously been used by the Navy. The first version ofthe AN-S-31 had only one chest pocket on the left side, but laterthe pockets were equipped on both sides that improved the suit’sfunctionality. Perhaps because this suit is an integrated versionof the wool A-4 suit that the Army Air Forces had adopted beforethis suit and the cotton M-426 suit the US Navy, AN-S-31 is alsoavailable in a mix of wool and cotton, as well as olive and khakicolors, which is unusual for a military item based on strict MIL-SPEC standards. Among them, this model is a type with pockets onboth chests and the insignia of the Army Air Forces.
