1918年に創隊した第5爆撃大隊“ボンバーバロンズ”に属する第72爆撃飛行隊は現在第72試験評価中隊として活動している米空軍史上最も古い歴史を持つ爆撃隊である。第二次大戦以前はハワイに配備され、訓練と陸海軍の機動に参加するなどの活動に従事した。1935年マウナロア火山の噴火の際、火山の周りに爆弾を投下することで溶岩を町からそらし、ハワイのヒロ市を救うのに役立った。このジャケットについたレザーパッチは当時兵士が個人的にカスタムしたもので、第5爆撃大隊がハンドペイント、第72爆撃飛行隊はステンシルで表現されている。第72爆撃飛行隊章のデザインは雲に走った稲光が部隊番号の72を表すという高度なデザインセンスには脱帽するばかりである。

The winter combat jacket, which is commonly known as “Tankers”, was originally developed as part of the winter combat uniform for armored division. On the European front it was used not only by armored units, but also by pilots due to the shortage of winter equipment. In 1943, when the M1943 field jacket, a versatile was adopted, and the tankers jacket came into limited use. The cotton twill outer shell has water and wind resistant finish. The 26oz wool was used for the inner lining, and the sides and sleeves are sewn with double-needle lap seams. In addition, the back sides are pleated to ease movement of arms. The jacket comes in two type, one with patch pockets, which is generally considered as the earlier model, and the other with welt pockets.
